On August 25, 2012, The Perry Initiative was pleased to present Dr. Tom Buchanan with an award for Excellence in Mentoring in recognition of his established and continuing efforts to encourage women to pursue careers in engineering and the sciences.

Dr. Tom Buchanan directs the Delaware Rehabilitation Institute (DRI) and holds faculty appointments in the Biomechanics & Movement Science Program and the Center for Biomedical Engineering Research. Dr. Thomas S. Buchanan has also served as a Deputy Dean of the University of Delaware College of Engineering as well as Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. A long-time champion of women in engineering and other STEM fields, Dr. Buchanan has mentored many students, including Perry Initiative Co-Founder, Dr. Jenni Buckley, and has encouraged gender equity and the increase in numbers of women in science and engineering programs.
